The Philippine Embassy in Madrid organized an art exhibition and book launch by Spain-based Filipino artist Isabel Echevarria at the Centro Cultural Eduardo Urculo in Madrid on 4 December 2018. The exhibit, entitled “Tiempos en Paralelo” features over 26 works by Ms. Echevarria, most of which bring together the past and the present in one canvass. The artist’s book, “Crossing Parallels,” was also launched and features some of the works exhibited.
Ms. Echevarria is a prolific artist who has exhibited in many countries for more than 30 years. She has appeared in several books on contemporary Filipino and international art while some of her works are currently hanging in museums and government offices across the Philippines and in Spain.
In his welcome address, Ambassador Philippe Lhuillier remarked on the constant collision of the past and present to the Filipino Community in Spain. However, he highlighted that his hope for the community is a clear vision for its future. He further, stated, “As Ms. Echevarria and her works today can attest, Filipinos are a talented people, and we thrive and grow where we are planted… With our community’s talents and our determination, we will continue to educate people of who we are as a people, how far we’ve come since the 19th century, what our country can offer in these modern times, and how bright the future looks for Filipinos, wherever they may be in the world.”
Ambassador Lhuillier also expressed his gratitude to the District of Tetuan and the head of the Cultural Center for co-organizing the event with the Embassy. The exhibit is open to the public until 4 January 2018 at the Centro Cultural Eduardo Urculo, Plaza Donoso, 5, in Madrid.
