H.E. Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier attended the renowned Good Friday Rites in Valladolid, Spain, upon the invitation of the Mayor of Valladolid, Oscar Puente Santiago.
Ambassador Lhuillier, together with other guests were met by Mayor Puente at the City Hall and brought to the Plaza Mayor where they listened to the “Sermon of the Seven Last Words.”
The Mayor then toured Ambassador Lhuillier and other guests around the city. The group later on joined hundreds of people in the General Passion Procession, a solemn procession of polychrome Castilian religious sculptures, carried on carriages (carrozas) owned by religious organizations (cofradías) who maintain the sculptures. Around 33 invaluable religious statues (pasos), some dating from the 16th and 17th centuries were shown.
Valladolid´s Holy Week celebration is considered one of the main cultural and religious events and tourist attractions in Spain.
