Rizal´s monument cleaned after being vandalized

The Philippine Embassy in Madrid reported that the base of Dr. José Rizal´s monument in the Avenida de Las Islas Filipinas in Madrid was cleaned on the afternoon of November 19.

It was vandalized with red spray paint on November 18.

The base was immediately cleaned by the Ayuntamiento de Madrid a day after the request was made by the Embassy.  The Ayuntamiento de Madrid is the agency responsible for the maintenance of all such cultural structures in Madrid.

The Embassy, headed by Charge d’Affaires a.i. Celia Marie Feria, thanked the Ayuntamiento de Madrid for their prompt action.

Dr. Rizal’s monument was inaugurated on 5 December 1996 along the Avenida de Las Islas Filipinas in Madrid to commemorate the 100th year of his death, as part of the celebrations marking the centennial of Philippine independence from Spain.
