According to the situation report issued by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) of the Philippines, a total of 454,093 families or 1,953,481 persons were affected by the Southwest Monsoon enhanced by tropical storm “Haikui”. Nineteen (19) persons were reported dead, nine (9) of which were from Barangay Commonwealth in Quezon City due to a landslide incident caused by heavy rains.
The Southwest Monsoon enhanced by TS Haikui located 300 kilometers Northeast of Taiwan brought heavy to intense and frequent rains over Luzon since August 6. A total of 89 cities and municipalities from the National Capital Region (NCR), Regions I, III and IV-A had severe flooding. NCR was the hardest hit of all the affected areas, according to NDRRMC.
According to the forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Luzon will still experience occasional rains, becoming frequent, which may trigger flash floods especially in low-lying areas around Metro Manila.
